Pumpkinland & Pumpkins :)

A group of friends decided to plan a trip to Pumpkinland by Orange City for the kids (and for the mom’s.) :)

The kids had loads of fun playing in the playhouses and on the “playground” equipment. They all seemed to enjoy watching and feeding the animals and going through the corn maze too. We were even able to take a few pictures of most of the kids before enjoying a picnic lunch. All together we had a fun morning with our friends! Logan was absolutely amazing as he sat nicely in his stroller the entire time and never whined or asked to get out at all!

After pumpkinland we met Auntie Bobbie, cousin Sophie, and Grandma Schouten at Grandpa’s pumpkin patch where we took a few pictures before picking out a pumpkin for the kids. As you can see from the pictures below, Logan was a little more interested in the pumpkins than the pictures. :) It was a great way to spend a beautiful fall day!

Lately…

Life has seemed busy! We’ve had play dates in the park, we’ve helped Daddy take the old porch railing off & put up a new one, we’ve saved Patches from the mean, awful scary neighbor dog, we’ve gone to Aunt Jill’s volleyball games, played at home, played with our cousins and friends, celebrated Daddy’s birthday, celebrated a friend’s birthday, gone to the Harvest Festival and alumni weekend activities, and just had some plain old fun family time!

We’ve had to resort to every method of “baby gates” we can come up with to stop Logan’s exploring… stairs seem to be his favorite activity :(

Thoughts sparked by a TV news segment…

So this morning I was watching my niece & nephew and all the kids were playing nicely up in Alexa’s room during Logan’s nap. I took full advantage of the alone time & turned the TV from PBS to the Today show just to check out what normal grown up TV is like. :)

In doing so I discovered a segment on “All the Single Ladies” and how the new trend in America is for adults to stay single instead of getting married. Something was said about record breaking statistics and all that but I didn’t really pay too close of attention. My gut reaction while watching was to feel like marriage was under attack and to think that its probably because of 2 things - 1 being that its much more acceptable and common for women to have children outside of marriage now then it ever was before and 2 being that there’s a much higher rate of divorce than ever before. At first I justified the story in my head by saying that not everyone has to or needs to get married and that even Paul spoke of those, like himself, who were called to live life single.

But what really happened was it got me thinking about what drives our world, our culture, and our lives. I believe its all rooted in selfishness.

I am in no way saying that marriage is the only answer for every person in the world. However, the Bible clearly states that our purpose on this earth is to be fruitful and multiply. How can we do that if we do not marry? I know the world will immediately state that you don’t need to be married to have sex & therefore to have children -and now-a-days sex isn’t even required in order to “make” a baby. However, I don’t agree with the world on those points. If you ask me, the Bible is very clear on how sexual relations are to be kept in the marriage bed. Therefore, if you aren’t married you shouldn’t be having sex. Simple as that. I could go on with that subject but I won’t.

Our world is daily becoming more & more selfish, self-involved, and self-obsessed. No wonder there’s so much violence, crime, murder, envy, slander, and the list could go on & on. Basically the sins in the world around us that once were viewed as evil are more and more being viewed as acceptable. Its okay to lie as long as you gain from it. Its okay to cheat (commit adultery) as long as you were following your heart and in love. Its okay to murder someone as long as you had just cause/reason. Its okay to dishonor your mother & father as long as they weren’t making you happy or meeting your needs. Its okay to steal if its not “hurting” anybody and its benefitting your needs. After all, aren’t all those people who live entirely off the government essentially stealing each day from the hard-working men & women who pay taxes? These are all rooted in selfishness.

We are a country who are obsessed with self. No wonder we find a story on the TV about how women don’t need to be married & have children to be fulfilled - they can pursue their dreams, their careers and whatever else they want without having to put everyone (husband & children) else’s needs above their own. After all, isn’t that the essential calling of being a wife and of being a mother? To marry someone isn’t just taking their last name and moving in together, its the dying of one’s self to be joined with another & the 2 shall be made 1 flesh. But that’s not what our culture tries to tell us anymore. Granted, you do not need to be married or have children in order to be happy, I know many who would love to be a wife or a mother but can not. That doesn’t mean they can’t be happy.

What I am saying is that to be a wife & mother, in my opinion, is a daily reminder of how Christ SELFLESSLY gave himself for us. He was completely without sin and yet he paid the price for every last one of my sins. That is 100% selfless. That is what we are to strive for each and every day.

How hard is it to remember that? I don’t know about any of you, but for me, it is a daily struggle. Everything around me tries to tempt me to think “what about me,” “what about my needs?” Instead we are called to put the needs, wants, desires, dreams, hopes, and cares of our loved ones above our own. Not simply as wives and mothers, but as Christians.

As I strive to train my children in the way the Lord wants them to go I have been working very hard at tending to their hearts & paying attention to what is driving their behavior instead of just the behavior itself. Its been a very eye-opening experience as I sit repeatedly throughout the day telling my 3 year old to ignore her selfish desires and think of her brother’s, her friend’s, or her cousin’s needs before her own. As I find them fighting over a toy & I ask her whether its more important that she make her brother happy or that she get what she wants I can’t help but think to myself how often I choose the wrong answer. Instead of doing everything I can to make my loved ones happy I so often find myself thinking “when will it be ME time” or thinking about how tired I am and when it will be someone else’s turn to do all the work while I sit back & be catered to.

How selfish is our world? In my opinion - VERY! And if you ask me, selfishness is what is at the root of every real problem we have. When a person murders someone, they are choosing their own desire over the other person’s life. When a person commits adultery, they are choosing their pleasure or wants above their spouse’s feelings and above so many other things. When a person lies, its always a choice of their own selfish needs and desires instead of the other person’s.

Ultimately Christ choose us over himself in the biggest, grandest way. It is our job to daily do the same in every way we can, no matter how hard it is.

I’ll jump off my little soapbox now. I just wanted to vent the thoughts in my head. They are my thoughts, my opinions. I’m not in any way saying you have to agree with them. I just felt like voicing them.

What others think…and my thoughts

Why is what others think important? In a way its not but in a way it is. I know we shouldn’t worry about it in the sense that if others will make fun of us or not like us for how we are and we shouldn’t let what others think stop us from living out our faith. However, we are supposed to live as witnesses for Christ, letting out lives reflect our faith & the power & might of our Lord and Savior.

I didn’t (and don’t) mean to get so deep or controversial…I’ve just been “worrying” about it too much lately. My dear, loving husband seems to think I should be over the loss of my father - that thinking about him, missing him, and wishing he was here is pointless because it won’t change anything & it won’t make things better or different, therefore why do it? Yet I can’t help it (and he says I can/should)…

This used to be my ultimate FAVORITE time of year. I LOVED going back to school, the fall season, the fact that both my husband’s & my birthday are in September, the cooler weather, all of it screams comfort to me. Now it is tainted in a way. Tainted with bittersweet memories, tainted with the loss, the pain, and the inability to direct my thoughts away from my father. I LOVE remembering him and do so with great joy throughout the year, yet what I remember at this time of year are the other things:

  • The last time I hugged him goodbye -
    • I was at Micah’s Aunt & Uncle’s house (the Dotinga’s) we’d just finished Sunday dinner & were ready to head back to our car to head South for the rest of our vacation. I’d given everyone, Dad included, hugs on our way out of the house, thinking it wasn’t a big deal because I would see them again in only 6 weeks when they came to IA for a visit. Yet something felt  off, I remember that clear as day. I didn’t want to let go of his hug. I for the first time in a long time when hugging him felt like crying. I hadn’t wanted to rush this trip & I felt suddenly like we were. I had forgotten Alexa’s toy in their car & so I had to run back to the house & ask Dad to get it for me. After retrieving it I gave him one more hug, and as he always said “Lord willing we’ll see you soon.”
  • The awe, stinging shock and the exact circumstances surrounding my house when that dreaded phone call came.
    • NEVER in  million years would I have guessed what I was about to hear.
  • The utmost empty, awful horrible pain/sobbing that erupted from me at the end of the visitation at church in Lethbridge.
    • The whole time people had come through the line I had felt like it wasn’t right -- like I ought to be comforting them - they after all had lost their pastor, their friend, their neighbor…but they were comforting me. It never seemed real, like it was all just fake and as if I was removed from it all. Yet when most everyone had left & my family was just mingling around, I walked over to look at him. Only it wasn’t him. I wanted so badly to just hug him, have him hug me back, to talk to him, to hear his voice, to have him wrap his arm lovingly around me & lean on me & saying something, anything, and call me “daughter” in his precious way he had. Yet it was staring me in the face that it wouldn’t happen ever again, that it was real, all too real, and it was awful and something inside me snapped. I just remember sobbing uncontrollably (and I remember my husband not even noticing at all and that making me sob even harder)…that it was my brother (i think as I was out of it) who pulled me away in a hug…
  • I remember the amazing, wonderful people of Lethbridge surrounding our family with their ever-present love & companionship & unthinkable generosity.
  • I remember the long & awful trip home
  • I remember the burial as if it would bring a closure & yet not ever feeling it…

So many things come to my mind. Not helpful things. I know all the truths I believe, I know they are true & most other days/times of the year I not only know & accept them, but they comfort me. Yet somehow, these days, this time of year it stings even more. It feels even worse. This is the only time, during this time of year, I think I allow the grief to really set in. I look at my children and I ache for them. I ache that they will never really, truly, get to know their grandpa. He was amazing with kids, he had such a way with them and I know he would have stolen my kids hearts with a simple wink. It pains me to know that Logan never got to meet him & that HE never got to meet Logan. At least I can tell Alexa & show her from pictures how much Grandpa loved her. That’s not an option with Logan. Oh how the small things hurt.

Yet after today I will once again close the flood gates, shut off the bitterness & the anger & even the pain, and I will cling to the words of comfort I have held so dear to my heart. I will once again remind myself that God’s plan is perfect, not a hair falls from our head without his knowledge, and that all this will work for His glory & His purpose. I know things could be worse. I know I can see good coming from our loss & our pain. Yet it doesn’t make it easier. I know he is in a much better place, a place I long to be, with our Lord and Savior. I rest assured we will one day meet again. But, as many do not seem to understand, it doesn’t make the loss here on earth any less real. There still is that large hole in our lives where his place once was. “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job 1:21
