Welcome Logan Eric! :)

Logan Eric joined our family on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 2:07 pm. Despite the dramatic entrance & difficulties of his first few days we are all thriving and doing great & couldn’t be happier to be spending time as a family at home!

Here’s some of the pictures we’ve taken so far:

The surgery room only had one blue blanket & the rest were pink so he had to have one of each to stay warm!

We were allowed to start rooming-in with him after I arrived on Saturday so it was really nice not having to scrub in & out of the NICU each time we wanted to hold him:

His set up in our room – with the portable heart monitor that would sound an alarm anytime his heart rate changed out of the “normal” range – ended up going off a lot during the night as it wasn’t very reliable – so much fun! :)

What’s been going on…

So yesterday was supposed to be the BIG DAY – we had it all planned out, lined-up and arranged with all the right people. Everything was set to go according to plan. But of course things in this life do not happen that way! All the hard that went into keeping my true due date & scheduled c-section dates completely secret from all friends & family who were not on a need-to-know basis was totally useless as only God knew Logan’s intended birth date! I find it truly amazing that no matter how much I crave & seek out organization & a plan for our lives, the Lord constantly reminds me that He alone knows what the future holds & I need to rely completely on him each day to hold the future.

Enough of that – lets get on to what’s been happening over the last couple of weeks!

On Tuesday, October 12th I went in for my regular doctor visit. It was supposed to be an easy in, easy out type of visit with the exception of the group B strep test needing to be done as well. I left Alexa at a play date with a friend & headed into my appointment. When I left there I had a 24-hr protein test I had to complete & instructions to take it extremely easy & avoid doing any strenuous tasks, shopping, long walks, extra cleaning or even lifting of anything over 20 lbs (like Alexa). I was not expecting that news at all as my BP up until then had been holding steady in the safe to good range. With Alexa I had higher BP #’s beginning already at week 30 that they were constantly monitoring & by 36 weeks the #’s had jumped high enough that I was put on bed rest as a result of them. Regardless of how I felt about it I picked up Alexa & headed home. On Thursday I brought in my 24hr test sample and let them take their blood work completely hoping all would come back as normal. My doctor was scheduled to be on vacation the next day through the weekend so I expected I wouldn’t hear anything until Monday or even my next appointment on Tuesday.

Friday morning I answered a blocked phone call only to discover that my doctor had taken the time to personally call me from home on her vacation day in order to tell me the not so great news: I needed to be on complete bed rest, no dishes, laundry or anything of that nature and rest as much of the day as possible in order to prevent my BP from going up or any other of the preeclampsia symptoms from appearing. My protein levels were in the moderate risk range & I would have to start seeing her twice a week until my surgery date. So we made arrangements for Alexa to spend time with family & I spent the next few days laying around bored as could be. Monday I had a normal check up with slightly elevated BP #’s and then I was sent for a non-stress test & given instructions to complete another 24 hr protein test.

By the time Thursday, October 21st rolled around my protein #’s had jumped even higher, my BP was quickly climbing and my headaches were intensifying to the point I was seeing dancing spots if I stood up to quickly or for too long. My doctor said they weren’t taking any chances & called my surgeon. After waiting for what seemed like hours I had another non-stress test & it was pretty clear they weren’t going to let me go home.

At 2:07pm on Thursday, October 21st Logan Eric made his entrance into the world. He as 6lbs 4oz and about 19.5 inches long. I was able to briefly hold him after he was checked out & given a good apgar score and then Micah & the nurses took him upstairs to be fully examined while I was closed up & put in the recovery room.

By the time I got upstairs I was informed that he wasn’t responding the way they wanted him to – he was very grunty and was having what they called spells where he would hold his breath for longer than they would like. From what they told me, at first it seemed he was starting to perk up and then they came back & say no, he was still concerning them. They have a very small window of time where they make their call – less than 4 hrs after he was born they had contacted the hospital in Sioux Falls & arranged for Logan to be transported there. Because he was a newborn their policy doesn’t allow for anything other than air transport due to the time it takes to get there. By 7:30 pm the airplane had arrived & left again. I’d been able to hold Logan just once more for only a few minutes before they had taken him by ambulance to the airport to be flown to Sioux Falls.

Despite a dramatic start, Logan thankfully only spent just over 3 1/2 days in the NICU unit before he was able to be released. I was unfortunately stuck in Sioux Center until Saturday noon when I was finally released so that I could go join Micah & Logan in Sioux Falls.  Thankfully my surgeon & my regular doctor were both very understanding of my desire to leave & they did not make me stay the recommended length of time I would normally have been in the hospital or I wouldn’t have been able to come home any earlier than Logan had! It was a crazy beginning to our little boy’s life but despite it all we are simply thrilled to have him home & we are so thankfully he is not only okay but is doing very well! Praise be to God & God alone for keeping us all in his almighty hands!

Being a stay-at-home mom

As much as I have always loved succeeding at what I do, being good at the tasks given to me, and receiving praise/success from my supervisors/co-workers etc… I know more than ever that spending as many moments as I can with my children is where I am currently called to be!

Granted – it’d be nice to have more income and “flexibility” in the budget. It’d be nice to not have certain people in my life look at me as those I’m a “lazy pile” or slacker or whatever else they’ve chosen to call my “choice” in life. At least I know that its just as hard of work if not harder spending all day alone in a house with your own flesh & blood (basically all your best & worst qualities appear in your child/children for you to daily witness).

But all in all I would have to say that for the first time in a very long time I have not longed for the weekends, and when Thursday night rolls around I’m not mentally computing how much limited time I will have to get everything I need to done & still be able to spend time with Alexa before starting a new week all over again.

Instead I have spent the weeks slowly checking things off my over 2 page long to-do list as I spend time realizing what an amazing “big girl” my Alexa is! Instead of being short & snappy with her for a few hours before putting her to bed, I have been able to really see & know where she’s coming from when she cries or whines. Instead of trying to figure out if she truly has a reason for being upset or if she’s just whining for the sake of it, I can know what she actually needs & how to help her get it.

Its an amazing feeling of peace with no stress, no worry, and no being high-strung all the time. Sure I’ve had my moments these weeks where I’ve thought to myself “this child is driving me crazy” but its typically for about a split second before I’m giving her a time-out or sending her to her room to whine by herself. Its been great to help her build things out of her blocks, sing the alphabet, cook with her, have “tea” with her, color together and take care of her babies. I really wouldn’t trade a moment of our weeks together for anything.

The first Tuesday at home Alexa came with me to my doctor’s appointment. The doctor let her help “measure baby” and she got to hold the speaker while we listened to the baby’s heartbeat. It was truly amazing to see the look of awe on her face as she loved every minute of it. She couldn’t help but tell everyone we saw for the next few days about how she helped the doctor check on baby. :)

I’m not sure how the next few weeks will go before baby arrives & makes things a tad busier for us, but I do know I’m going to keep the worry out of our lives & enjoy every last minute I have alone with Alexa! It truly is an amazing experience to be able to watch her mind work & see her learn & grow each day.

Softball League Champions!

Just wanted to take a minute while I’m catching up on past “posts” to actually remember the moment when the guys’ softball team (sponsored by State Farm this year) won their division of the Men’s Softball League in Sioux Center! :)

They went the entire tournament without a single loss & as fans we sure enjoyed watching them play! Great job guys!

Here’s a picture of the guys after the championship game –some of those who played this season weren’t able to make it for the last game so they’re not in the picture but the guys sure appreciated all their help! :)

Water, water, water everywhere

From the heavy snow we got this winter melting this spring, to the heavy, heavy rains that started falling in June & again in July it seemed that water was EVERYWHERE. I laughed looking back at Alexa’s baby book & noticed I’d mentioned the flooding of 2008 when the Cedar Rapids area was under water & roads were closed/etc. That seems like nothing compared to the flooding across Iowa this year. Our area was hit with some pretty heavy rainfall in short amounts of time causing a lot of homes to have water in the basement, but I’ll get to that later. Ames, Iowa was also hit with major flooding & there were pictures on the news of our former (& first purchased ‘home’) trailer. Here are some pictures of what our trailer looked like when we bought it:

And here are some of the flooding:

So anyway, our area was also dealt a lot of water…no city flooding like in Ames or anything, but then again we don’t have a couple rivers going through town either. July had such record rainfall that most of the residents of Sioux County were dealing water in their basement & we were no exception. The water table was so high that the water was literally seeping up through the cracks in our foundation! We ended up having to pull up the carpet & vacuum all the water up as it came in & we placed MANY MANY large cattle fans under the carpet to circulate the air. After about 3 weeks of the fans running constantly things were finally bone dry & we felt comfortable returning the basement to its normal condition.  It was a stressful and annoying ordeal but it is thankfully (hopefully) over with, for this year at least we hope!

Life sure is changing fast…

I can’t believe its already September! Let alone September 10th. It seems like only yesterday we brought Alexa home from the hospital & I was enjoying my first maternity leave as well as my first experience at being a mom. I can’t help but remember feeling like life as I knew it could not possibly get any better than it was during those moments. That should have been my first clue that life would not only change drastically, but that the next 2 years would inevitably have their trials unlike I could have ever imagined.

This week Monday marked not only my last “employed labor day” holiday but also the 2 year anniversary of my Father’s death. I heard somewhere that it can only get easier. I’m not sure I believe that but I keep hoping its true. It could be due to the fact that I have major pregnancy mood swings which make me cry at even the tiniest bit of a sappy commercial, let alone truly emotional moments in life, but either way every little thing reminds me of my Dad & I end up tearing up in no time. For instance, our church denomination recently held their Synod. As I was reading our church newsletter I noticed it held a report of the general daily happenings at Synod. No big deal right? Most people even find these things a tad bit uninteresting. I however found myself in tears. Why? Simply because it was at the last Synod, a mere 3 years ago, when my husband & I brought my mom to meet up with my Dad at the Synod held in Chicago on our way to family vacation. It was also there that Dad had been appointed to a committee to research the Federal Vision. The report I found myself tearing up over? A report merely mentioning what that committee had figured out/determined.

This week I find myself emotional enough as is with the 6th being the date Dad passed away, to the 7th being Micah’s birthday, to the 8th being when his grandpa also passed away…let alone due to the fact that it was my final week working at Interstates. I have been working there for the past almost 4 years and it truly become a sort of home for me. That place has seen me through some major ups & downs – from the purchase of our first real home (not counting the trailer in Ames) to the birth of our first child, to the death of my father, to the soon to be birth of our second child. It has truly been a great place to work & I will miss going there each day.

On the other hand, I’m excited to be home each day with Alexa & with the new baby once this child makes its arrival into the world. So far in the my first few hours at home I have managed to rearrange Alexa’s room & clean up most of the toys on the main level of the house. Now if I can get the rest of my 2 page to-do list done before November I’ll be thrilled :)!

Horseback riding & fun with the cousins!

Alexa’s Aunt Anne & cousin’s Hannah, Mary & Jacob came out & stayed at Grandma & Aunt Sarah’s house for a week in August. The cousins all had a great time playing together. One of the afternoon’s Alexa took her cousins from Wisconsin, Hannah, Mary & Jacob, & her cousins Mackinzie & Faith horseback riding on her Grandpa’s horse named “Duster” – a horse which Grandpa happens to call Alexa’s. Alexa’s Aunt Jena (Micah’s sister) helped the kids each take a turn riding the horse. The only one of them all who wouldn’t ride was Jacob so we got a few pictures of him standing in front of the horse while the girls were all on it.
