We spent Thursday relaxing during the morning (well I did – while others went hiking) and then the boys went to Sturgis to pick up a motorcycle. Later in the afternoon, after a few games & such, most of the family met up with them in Deadwood to walk to town & see the street show that happens daily. Overall it was nice to have a relaxing day!

Day 3 of the Schouten Family vacation
Day 3 involved a little bit of relaxing & sticking around the cabin in the morning & then going to a waterfall & the fish hatchery before spending time playing games in the afternoon. Here’s a few photos from our day:
Once we got to the top of the waterfall there was a couple of nice spots to take in the view. Here’s a pic of Dad at the lower lookout point videotaping those of us on the upper lookout point:
Then it was on to the fish hatchery, Alexa LOVED watching the fish eat the dog food but I’m not sure if perhaps Daddy liked it a bit more than her…
Day 2 of the Schouten Family Vacation
Here’s the typical shot of Alexa from vacation – hovering over Sophia trying to be a “Big” helper… yes I’m so scared of what life will be like when we bring her sibling home!
Tuesday’s activities involved visiting Mount Rushmore & then we went to Storybook Island for Alexa’s sake (although as you can see it seemed to be a crowd pleaser for a few of the others as well) ;)

Schouten Family Vacation – continued
Each morning of vacation was sort of the same, everyone woke up & ate their breakfast. Then those who were interested took hikes & walks throughout the trails surrounding our cabin. Despite that I didn’t join them, I happened to get a few pictures on my camera from their trips…
Vacation with the Schouten family
So its been quite a while since we came back from vacation & we have finally got back into the swing of things. It was a great week away (well, 5 days or so) and we really enjoyed our time with the family.
Micah’s sister Kiley, her boyfriend Sean, and his sister Coby & her husband Kris all flew into our area on Saturday the 17th of July. By Monday, July 19th we were all packed up & ready to head out. We took 3 vehicles – ours, Bobbie & Eric’s pickup and Mom & Dad’s van. We planned to depart from Sioux Center around 9 on Monday morning & we were pretty close to right on time, despite the rain that was pouring down while we loaded the vehicles. Coby & Kris were our first passengers.
After a whole 2 hours or so later we made our first stop. Mitchell, SD and the famous Corn Palace.
After loading back up we drove the next stretch, a whole 1/2 hr or so until we stopped at a rest stop for our first picnic lunch of the trip. After lunch we drove about an hour or so before stopping again for some gas & much needed potty breaks. Then it was back on the road again as we headed for our next stop – Sturgis, where we picked up a few last minute groceries that we hadn’t previous purchased.
After that it was only about a 40 minute drive or so to the cabin which was located just outside of Lead, SD on Terry Peak. Despite rain when we left Sioux Center & when we arrived in Sturgis the rest of the trip was a beautiful sunny day and we had a great time traveling across South Dakota but it was great to finally be at our destination!
We spent the evening unpacking, exploring our new “home” for the week, and relaxing in the hot tub. We were all pretty tired so we turned in pretty early that first night. Alexa, much to her delight, was able to sleep in an adorable “car” bed in Grandpa & Grandma’s room (it was Grandpa’s idea!)
More to come later…

Potty Training – oh me oh my!
My husband has wanted to take the initiative with this activity from the get go. So I have let him (mainly because he typically has more patience than I do). He was positive that he would have Alexa trained by the time she was 2. That was Sunday, June 27th and let me tell you – she was not yet trained!
Knowing that she is a stubborn child, I knew this wouldn’t be easy as pie. She began her interest in the potty chair shortly after her 1st birthday and after a year of going on it off & on, the only thing she really wanted was to wear big girl panties! The rest, as she says from time to time: “I don’t like it!” Over the last few weeks my husband has put forth a bigger effort, despite still not going FULL force on it.
I happen to think that you need to just decide to do it & stick with it – that you need to have consistency & essentially the “no going back” attitude. Especially with Alexa. If she thinks she can get things her way, she’ll do anything to achieve that and she can spot your bluffs & weaknesses easily. We had the same issue with her big girl bed. My husband wanted to ease her into it, so we just took the side off, and went through that whole process. Finally one day I was sick of it & was in the nesting mode and so I just switched her room to the one downstairs & only put the big girl bed in it. She loved it & hasn’t looked back.
I had a feeling she’d react the same way to the potty training. As long as she knew the diaper option was there, she’d always revert back to it. If she thinks its not an option, well then she might just accept it & do it. I do know that she’s ready. Many people have said to me “she’s only 2 she’s just not ready yet.” But she tells us every time she goes (whether it be during or after the fact) so I know she knows when she’s going to go. She begs to wear big girl panties & be a big girl too and she certainly can control whether or not she goes.
Wednesday night she’d gone to do chores with Grandpa in her big girl panties. When she came back she drank an entire capri sun. We asked her a couple times if she had to go potty. Her answer was constantly no, but she’d do a little dance and hold herself as if to make sure she hadn’t let it out yet. I took her in the house & asked her again. Still no. So I took all her clothes off & let her sit in the house naked. She kept asking me for a diaper so I knew she had to go potty (and so did she.) I told her that no, she couldn’t have a diaper & that they were all gone. She refused to sit on the potty chair or go for me, she just kept dancing around the kitchen or having screaming/crying fits if I took her in the bathroom.
Finally about 2 1/2 hrs later Daddy came in the house. He asked her once if she wanted to go sit on the potty – and for the next 15 minutes he sat with her trying to get her to go on either her potty chair or on the big potty. In the meantime I went upstairs to get ready for bed (it was way past my bedtime) & sure enough, all the sudden they run upstairs to tell me that Alexa had gone potty! YEAH!
Thursday she went to daycare and had accident after accident all day long. :( We put her in princess panties (pull-ups) and took her to Daddy’s softball game. After playing hard on the swing set & then going & doing chores with Grandpa she came home & was STILL DRY! So Daddy asked her if she wanted to sit on the potty chair & sure enough there she went! That time it only took a little while (5-10 min) before she’d relax enough to let it all out! She spent all day Friday at home with Daddy and only had 1 accident…YEAH!
After spending Friday night & all day Saturday dry we’ve been pretty happy with her progress…hopefully it keeps up! The only catch it seems is that she’ll only go potty for Daddy! If mommy asks she’ll sit on the potty but she refuses to actually go…so for now, its all up to Daddy. All he has to do is come home & say “Alexa should we go potty?” and she hops up & goes within seconds! We’re hoping Alicia will have the same reaction too, otherwise this could be a LONG week for her!

Consideration Part 2
I know that I shouldn't complain. And for the most part I don’t mean to. After all people have much much worse situations out there. I should be happy with the fact that 5 years into our marriage we still truly love each other & are happy together. That should be enough right? Yes & it is. Sometimes though, a girl just has to vent!
The fact is that most of the time I just go through our marriage and life not even thinking about these things because although I mentioned them in Part 1 to illustrate what I’m talking about, I typically do not dwell on them each day – if I did I’d probably go CRAZY! Plus, it’d be totally useless because dwelling on them doesn’t change them!
Each day I truly enjoy how we live our lives and am happy & content knowing I have it pretty stinking good. I think that it (any sacrificing on my part) is all worth it in the end because at least I know I'm doing what I can to make things peaceful, blissful, and loving between us and I know that I’m living in accordance with the way I am called to live...but that 5% of the time or so when I really stop & look at things (usually because something’s happened that hurts or upsets me – which is much more common with pregnancy hormones) it is rather hard to find a list of ways he actually "sacrifices" back for me...unless you're referring to times when he limits himself to oh say 3 or 4 beers instead of 6 or 8...
Sometimes I think its because of something like the "only child syndrome" where they tend (not saying this is always the case) to have a hard time living with anyone, thinking of anyone else, etc -- because they are simply not used to doing that with their siblings. My husband had life that way at home being he was the only boy -- he was pretty much left alone to live his life without having to pay any attention to the rest of the world or at least his family - never answering for anything he said or did because "he was a boy" amongst a family of girls where girls did most of the housework if not all of it.
When I met him, he was the MOST considerate person I had ever known. I had never talked to & spent time with someone who was so thoughtful and compassionate towards others as he was – honestly! And he still is that way today – just not always or at least typically not towards me. The funny thing is I noticed this about him as we got more & more serious – that he’d treat his family like an after-thought but everyone else as if their world would fall over without his help or attention. I used to remind him that just because he was busy thinking of everyone else & “saving the world” for everyone else didn’t mean he could neglect his family. Now that we’re his family – well yeah you can do that math :)! He often says “I know you love me & I love you & we’re married for life so you’ll always be here” – and I will because we do love each other & that’s the commitment we made to each other. I’m more & more convinced that this is the reason marriage is a LIFELONG commitment because in NO relationship will you ever LIKE the person EVERY single moment of every day for the rest of your lives! :) Just because you love them doesn’t always mean you love everything they say or do.
I should say that he is an AMAZING man – I am truly spoiled in terms of how he helps me around the house and with Alexa – he’s not typically too busy to spend time with Alexa and he certainly changes the majority of her diapers. :) He tends to do all the dishes by hand (because I use too much water) and he does almost all the yard work, bug killing, and garbage removal. He certainly does all the snow removal (I'm a wimp) and spends hours fixing anything that is broken around the house as well as maintaining all modes of transportation for us. He will cook (nothing gourmet unless you like the tator tot casserole hodge podge recipe he made up) and is the primary caretaker for the dog (mainly because I’m not an animal person nor did I want the pet in the first place!) He also works like a mad man & helps out anyone who asks. So all in all – yes he’s a wonderful husband & a GREAT father!
Its more in the lack of thoughtfulness & consideration towards his wife’s feelings & emotional needs that I get frustrated with me! I pay so much attention to his feelings & likes or dislikes that I have given things up and adjusted to living without things I’m used to, just to please him or help him. Yet it sometimes feels like he doesn’t even care about my preferences. I’ve even taken to the thinking that the old saying of “they won’t know how you feel until you tell them” is true, so I tell him EXACTLY how I’m feeling and what I prefer…and within minutes he’ll have done the opposite. And when I ask why?…”cuz i know you’ll get over it” is the answer I get! :)
Coming from 2 different family backgrounds doesn’t help the mix either. I grew up in a house without ANY doubt of the love that my parents shared. If you look back at scrap books & home videos, any stranger could easily see their love. As could any of my siblings & my friends if they happened to be over at our house. My sister Sarah & I constantly would say "EWWW" or "Stop that" or my personal favorite "Get a room" to which my father would respond "this is my room, along with the rest of the rooms in this house!" :) He would then proceed to show my mother MUCH love & PDA! My parents were always very affectionate with each other and always showed us kids that they not only loved each other but were IN LOVE with each other!
My husband did not grow up in such a house. His family is definitely not the "affectionate" type. They love each other, they just don’t show it publicly or in front of others in any group setting. More & more over the years I've seen more hugs & such but overall their affection showing measurement would be about an inch compared to my family's measurement of a mile or so. He definitely learned from that example. Its funny to see how small differences can end up leaving such big impacts! I'm definitely not saying either way is bad, its just one of those many tiny things that plays into forming a new home. So, is it so much to ask that he break free from the example he grew up with and meet me somewhere closer to the way I grew up with? After all – a woman (the kind that doesn’t have a personal space bubble at least) has some affection needs for every day life…and the hugs & kisses of her darling little 2 year old aren’t exactly the same as what she’s asking her husband for! Did the romance really die when the dating stopped? Although I think that may be the case, I certainly hope not…oh but a girl can dream can't she? :)
